Course Description

QGIS is an open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software offering powerful functions well suited to mineral exploration and geoscience work. The free program is rapidly growing in popularity among geologists and is supported by a global network of users. There has never been a better time to learn about QGIS!

Attendees will become familiar with QGIS tools to manipulate, visualize and analyze common geospatial data produced by mineral exploration. During this one-day practical workshop you will learn how to:

  • Install the free software (Windows or Mac),
  • Navigate the QGIS interface,
  • Download publicly available spatial datasets,
  • Render thematic layers,
  • Input, edit and manage mineral exploration results,
  • Produce informative and attractive maps.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for geologists and prospectors who want to learn about the open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software QGIS. No prior GIS software experience is needed. Professionals interested in exploring open source options for GIS software will find this workshop particularly useful.

This is an incredible opportunity that the TGDG is pleased to offer at a very economical rate as part of their commitment to support valuable and resume building educational events for students and young mining professionals.

Fees

  • Student: $50
  • Member: $100
  • Non-member: $150 (Registration for non-TGDG members - includes annual TGDG membership for remainder of 2019-2020 season.)

Prerequisites

Registrants will need to bring their own laptops. Software can be downloaded at https://qgis.org/ . Registrants will be notified by email with download and installation instructions.

This event will not be broadcasted.

Attendees will need to bring their own laptop.

Course Instructors

Charles Beaudry: VP Exploration, Orefinders Resources Inc.

Antoine Schwartzmann: Project Geologist, Orefinders Resources Inc.

Antoine Caté : Structural Geology Consultant - SRK Toronto

Gautam Narayanan: Manager, Corporate Development, Orefinders Resources Inc.

Volodymyr Andrienko: Staff Geologist, Orefinders Resources Inc.

Volker Moeller: Senior Project Geologist, Avalon Advanced Materials Inc.

Charles Beaudry: Mr. Beaudry is a seasoned mining executive with over 40 years’ experience in project generation, business development, exploration geochemistry and international project management. He has been involved in a number of deposit discoveries during his carreer and worked with Noranda/Falconbridge (now Glencore/Xstrata) from 1989 to 2006 and worked overseas in Brazil (country manager 1996-2001) and Papua New Guinea (2004-05). In 2008-2009 he was General Manager for New Opportunities for Iamgold Inc. and from 2010 to mid-2013 he was founding President and later Chief Executive Officer of Xmet Inc., outlining a NI 43-101 compliant, 850,000 ounce gold deposit in the Abitibi greenstone belt of Quebec. Charles is a fully trained Six-Sigma black belt and uses teaches QAQC using Quality principles. He is an expert in Mapinfo and has adopted QGIS as his GIS of choice for project exploration work.

Antoine Schwartzmann: Antoine has 6 years of experience in both academia and industry exploration in North America, Europe, Northern Africa and South America working on gold and base metal deposit. He has expertise in remote greenfield and brownfield exploration. Antoine has experience with GIS software as ArGIS, QGIS, Mapinfo/Discover. He also can use 3d modeling program as Surpac, Gemcom, Leapfrog for 3D modeling purposes. Antoine currently work at Orefinders Resource inc. and PowerOre inc. as a Junior Geologist compiling data, 3D modeling and helping the VP of exploration Charles Beaudry on the various project that both companies have.

Antoine Caté : Antoine has 8 years of both academia and industry field experience in North and South America, Europe and Australia working on gold and base metal deposits, from greenfield to brownfield exploration. He is also an expert in the applications of data science and Machine Learning in geosciences, including work on prospectivity analysis. Antoine is author or co-author in several peer-reviewed publications and numerous presentations in economic geology, and in applications of Machine Learning in geosciences. He is a recipient of the Mountjoy Exchange Award of the Geological Association of Canada. Antoine was the leader of the team which was awarded the second place at the international Integra Gold Rush challenge in 2016 and was involved in the founding of two companies related to the mining industry: Goldspot Discoveries Inc. and Geolearn Solutions Inc. Antoine’s current work at SRK includes structural field investigation, 3D modelling, and the development of innovative tools applied to structural geology, and mineral exploration.

Gautam Narayanan: Gautam Narayanan has a Bachelors degree in Geology and Masters degree in Economic Geology from the University of Toronto, and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business. He has a Capital Markets background as he previously worked in Equity Research at Canaccord Genuity. Gautam is currently working with Orefinders and Power Ore, focusing on Corporate Development where he is responsible for generating investment ideas and sourcing potential projects for acquisition, and perform financial analyses and modeling. Gautam is also active on the marketing aspect for Orefinders and Power Ore, and frequently works on creating visually simplistic, yet informative maps targeted towards investors. A tool he consistently uses for creating maps, conducting spatial analyses and generating project acquisition ideas is QGIS. He is proficient in QGIS and is comfortable with the Python language which he has been using since 2012.

Volodymyr Andrienko: Volodymyr has academic experience dealing with the Bushveld Igneous Complex, culminating with substantial geochemical analysis of several geological layers in the complex. Geochemical data was acquired with various laboratory tools including the microprobe and ICPMS, among others, followed by data processing. After the completion of academia, he acquired his most recent practical experience dealing with the Kerr-Addison gold project in Virginiatown, Ontario. He partook in many tasks within project including core logging, drill alignment and logistics, fieldwork and sampling, and managing. Volodymyr has experience with the ArcGIS software for field data synthesis and Micromine software for drill hole planning and gyro survey monitoring. His current work is related to the Perry copper project for PowerOre Inc. through the usage of Infomine and Gemcom applications for mine drift and stope structure digitization for potential future underground operations.

Volker Moeller: Volker is a registered P.Geo. in Ontario, holds a Ph.D. in Economic Geology and an M.Sc. in Economic Geology and Structural Geology. He has 15 years of GIS experience using ArcGIS, Mapinfo/Discover and QGIS and five years of experience with a variety of 3D packages, such as GEMS, Leapfrog, Datamine and Surpac. Currently, he is focused on exploration and resource estimation for base and tech metal deposits at Avalon in Toronto.
